Retire Rich – Let Everyone Else Work

October 15, 2010 by Daniel

According to several recent surveys, 40% of people plan to delay retirement. Besides a stock market that would make an avid roller coaster rider turn white, lack of savings and poor investments are the primary culprits driving this statistic.

Delayed retirement, or retirement on a cat food diet, doesn’t have to include you. According to Fool.com, with a few steps, retirement glory days can be had by someone as simple as myself.… Read the rest

Life is Change – be Prepared

October 4, 2010 by Daniel

I’ve been noticing something lately. Something that’s really had me thinking. Life seems to hit those who are most unprepared…the hardest. Especially those who are financially unprepared. I work with a guy (a very nice guy) who always seems to be flirting on the edge of financial disaster.

If it’s not car trouble it’s trouble with the college where his two oldest kids attend. If it’s not doctor co-payments, it’s air conditioner problems. Here recently, he bought a near brand new car (because his other car was about to disintegrate). Turns out this nearly “new” car had been in an accident.… Read the rest

Buy the Da*n Latte

September 6, 2010 by Daniel

If you haven’t already heard of the “Latte Factor”, it was popularized by David Bach in his now bestselling The Automatic Millionaire.

U.S. News recently put this statement to task, stating that “it might be based on faulty math.” Well, a penny saved is a penny earned, right? Not so fast.

His [Bach’s] so-called “Latte Factor” includes all kinds of expenses, such as manicures, massages, restaurant meals, and premium cable.

Beat the Heat on a Budget

August 18, 2010 by Daniel

Summers in the south are…hot. I can take a dry heat but a hot, humid, sweltering heat is another matter altogether. Nowhere is that hottness more evident than in my utility bill (my electric bill to be precise). Crazy as it may seem, I keep my house at a balmy 78 degrees during the day and 76 degrees at night. We have lots of tile so it really doesn’t seem as hot. But it’s hot nonetheless.

So, what do you do if you can’t afford to run your A/C all day? Or, like me, you’re tired of high electric bills? As Jennifer Derrick from PF Advice explains, there are several actions you can take today to beat the heat and save money to boot.… Read the rest

I Wanna Retire Rich

August 16, 2010 by Daniel

When someone says “rich”, what number hits your mind? And by rich I mean having enough money not to have to work unless you choose to do so, presumably because you actually love what you’re doing. I’ve always thought one million as a lot of us do. But now that doesn’t seem quite so, what’s the word…lasting?

CNNMoney.com asked the question, “how rich is rich?” and came up with some very interesting answers.

First, rich must be defined. What do we really mean when rich comes out of our mouths?

Wealth is a subjective concept, but one thing is universal in most definitions: being able to live a comfortable life without having to work.
